As I drove through the entrance of our apartment, I noticed some interesting seed baskets suspended in the air. They looked really attractive . It looked as if they were flowers hanging from the creeper. I tried to have a closer look I removed one from the creeper.
Browsing on the net I found that they belonged to a species called Aristolochia ringens. I have observed these weird looking flowers which have a pitcher kind of opening.
These mature fruits have seeds which are dispersed by wind. These seeds are tear shaped.
Aristolochia is an important genus widely used in traditional medicine. During the past two decades, this genus has
attracted much interest and has been the subject of numerous chemical and pharmacological studies. It is a rich source of aristolochic acids, which are unique to this genus. The roots of this plant are well known as an antidote for snake bite.
However scientists have been warning people of the use of aristolochic acids in natural medicine as they are carcinogens and toxic to the kidneys.
